New Volunteer
St. Bernard Health Center is excited to
announce the addition of a new staff member. Jake Helmer is a
Benedictine Volunteer from Saint John’s University in Collegeville,
Minnesota, USA. He graduated from Saint John’s in 2014 with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Health Science and has plans to attend
medical school in the US after his time in Tanzania. Jake arrived in
Hanga on July 24th and will be working for the Health
Center full-time until April 1st. During the mornings,
Jake helps in the laboratory with cleaning, obtaining specimen from
patients, microscopic slide staining and record keeping. When
patients are not present, he likes to study and practice Kiswahili
with the other laboratory staff members. Jake spends his afternoons
looking for ways to improve the Health Center. Recently, he, along
with help from the staff, created a new patient history filing system
that will allow the Health Center to have detailed records of
patient’s previous visits. This new change will keep the Health
Center more organized and provide better care to patients. He is very
happy to have the opportunity to work at the Health Center and we are
excited have him. We look forward to the new ideas and improvements
he can bring to the Health Center in his time with us. Welcome Jake!
